Sorry that we have not been updating the blog daily...we were having some computer difficulties! We have hopefully overcome these technological difficulties and will be updating daily!
This morning we started our day with morning meeting in English. Mrs. Helfer shared some pictures of her summer vacation. All of the students will be sharing the posters about their summer vacation over the next few days. Our question of the day was Have you ever ridden a horse. We learned that a greater number of students have riden a horse and a fewer number of students have not ridden a horse. We counted by 2s and learned that 26 friends have ridden a horse and 11 have not. We also decided that an even number of people have ridden a horse and an odd number of friends have not. Ask your child to tell you how to determine if a number is odd or even. After our morning meeting we went over our morning work...making words. The big words were play ground and garajes. Talk with your child and ask them to share with you the words that they were able to make from these big words. During reading workshop we practiced read to self. We are work on becoming independent at reading independently and building our stamina. We were impressed that the students were able to go from 3 minutes yesterday to 10 minutes today. Today we also got new handwriting books and practiced Frog Jump Capitals. All of theseletter start the same way. Ask your child what letters are Frog Jump Capitals. We ended our morning with a fantastic story about an author named Bird Baylor. She is an author who lives her life noticing everything around her. She keeps tract of what she sees in a special notebook called a "lifebook." Many of the students are excited about someday keeping their own “lifebook” (which is what is going to happen soon!)
After a short (rained out) recess, we came back to our classroom and worked on our number of the day book. Today's number was 10. Ask your child to tell you how they made 10 cents and the number sentences that they were able to come up with that equal 10. After our Number of the Day, we created a chart of our thinking about Guinea Pigs. We recorded what we think we know about guinea pigs and things were are wondering about this little creature. Tomorrow we will begin an investigation of guinea pigs to see what we can learn about our class pet Sammy. We ended the day with math. In math, the green gators practiced how to divide 4 pancakes onto 2 plates. The red rhinos started math with number flashes and ended it with story problems. Ask your child to show you how to flash the number 18.
