Whoo...what a busy day we had today. This morning our morning meeting was in english. We helped write our morning message and participated in our daily math routines. We started a new math routine on Monday. We are workin on creating math mountains with the total being 100. We get to pick one partner (which has to be a multiple of ten) and then we have to dtermine the other partner. We then write the number sentences that correcpind with the math mountain and make the partners using dimes.
After morning meeting, we had reading workshop. The red rhinos had two minilessons today. The first minilesson was on a new choice for the daily five. The students now have the choice of writing in their writing about reading notebooks. They are able to respond to the stories that they are reading indpendently by determining a word to describe the character and using text based details to support their thinking. Or they may choose to step into the story and record what it is the character may say. Our second minilesson was on noticing and remembering words within the books that we read. The green gators read the story Fluffy and Barron and worked on stepping into the story. We ended our morning with continuing to write our Flat Stanley letters.
In the afternoon we read some of the story Flat Stanley in Space. Then, the red rhinos worked on represnting numbers using quick ones, tens, and hundreds. The green gators worked on solving story problems that invloved money.
We ended our afternoon with a trip to england. We learned a lot about how Christmas is celebrated in England.Ask your child to share with you what they learned about Chrsitmas in England.

Today was a great day! We started our morning with our word study assessments and a morning meeting in Spanish. We then glued our word study words in our word study notebooks. We were all excited when Mrs. Zodarecky came into our classroom to read us a story called Herschel and the Hannukah Goblins. She taught us about the charcateristcs of a fiction story which include the characters, problem, and solution.
In the afternoon we listened to a little more of our Flat Stanley book. Then we explored what happened when we dropped our parachutes. We learned that air affects the way that our parachutes fall. We learned that air resistence causes our parachutes to fall slowly. The students will be brining their prachutes home today. Please ask your child to explain air resitance to you. We had a great surprise when Tolulope's dad arrived and became our first mystery reader of the year. He read us the story Froggy Eats Out. To end the day we determined which table won the organization trophy for the week. Congratulations to the yellow table. Also congratulations to Ian and Danielito who won the estimation prize for the week!

Today was another busy day! In the morning, our question of the day was: What color is your hair? We learned that more of our friends have brown hair than have blonde or black hair. We showed this using a number sentence, and compared the numbers writing which number was "more than" or "less than" another number.
We are continuing our math routines in the morning, adding a different number to our total. Our number today was 188, and we showed this on our 240 chart by writing the equation 188 = 180 + 8.
During Reading workshop, some of our friends read the book Julius, El Rey de La Casa, and we talked about what the character was like at the beginning of the story, and what happened to cause the character to change at the end. The Red Rhinos learned about the Literacy Cafe menu, and how we can use this to help us when we read to ourselves, by choosing a strategy to help us when we read.
We read more from our book Flat Stanley, and are continuing to enjoy the adventures that Flat Stanley has.
During math, the Green Gators took a quick quiz on addition facts, and practiced using the strategies of counting on, drawing dots, and counting from the higher number. We are continuing to practice our addition facts through ten and higher, to help us with solving word problems. The Red Rhinos practiced making quick drawings using tens, hundreds, and ones.

Today was a very productive day! We started our day with something new to help our friends learn their sight words. Instead of calling our friends by their real names, we have given each of the students a new "name" that is one of the sight words our first grade friends are learning. So, our friends call each other "Miss said", Mr. What, etc. We will continue to practice these words until Christmas break, so ask your child what their "new" name is!
In the morning, we began with our morning meeting in Spanish. Our question of the day was: Do you have a dog? We learned that 18 of our friends did have dogs, and 19 of our friends do not. We practiced writing the words "mas" and "menos" underneath each of the words, to show which number was more, and which number was less.
Then we read our poems of the week. In English, the poem was How to Talk to your Snowman. The friends who read this poem learned about words like arctic, antarctic, freeezing, and igloo. Our friends who had their poem in Spanish read the poem Una Carta Importante, which was a letter to Santa Clause. Each group then drew a picture and wrote about the mental images that the words in the poem created for us.
During our practice of the Daily Five, each of our word study groups learned how to sort our word study words, and practiced putting them in those groups, saying the names of the words as we do it. Ask your child what their word study words are, and how they sorted them. We also continued to learn about the different parts of a friendly letter, as we wrote a class letter to different teachers in our district to help us practice for our Flat Stanley letters that we will be sending out very soon!
After lunch, we read our Read Aloud book about Flat Stanley, as we learn more about friendly letters as well. In Social STudies, our friends reviewed the different places in our community, and practiced saying "Yo veo...and describing the things we see on our way to school.
During math, the Green Gators learned how to make math mountains, and using them to help us find an unknown partner. We did a great job counting on from the bigger number, and drawing dots as we count to help us keep track. The Red RHinos practiced counting and adding numbers to 100.

Today was a very productive day! We took our word study assessment and glued our word study words. In writing workshop we learned the parts of a friendly letter (heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature) and practiced writing one as a class to our previous student teacher, Mr. F. We then had a chance to start writing a friendly letter to the person of our choice.
In reading workshop, the Green Gators read the story "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon" and then brainstormed different character traits of the main character. We then wrote about one of these traits and gave examples from the story of when the character displayed this trait. The Red Rhinos shared their writing for stepping into stories for the "Little Red Head."
In math, the Green Gators played the games "double compare" and "10s go fish" to practice the counting on skill and comparing numbers. The Red Rhinos reviewed the various kinds of word problems that we've learned and practiced the procedures for solving these problems. We then took the rest of our assessment.
In science both the Red Rhinos and the Green Gators experimented with the way that air takes up space by placing a vial of air upside down in a tub of water, and observed how the pocket of air stays in the vial when it's submerged.
